#CARICOMFreeMovement, March 11th, 2024 – Caricom leaders are making huge efforts to bring about the free and full movement of Caricom nationals by March 31st, as expressed by Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley, speaking at the closing press conference of the 46th CARICOM Heads of Government Meeting. However, not all nations are taking part such as Antigua and Barbuda, which said free full movement will be too much, affecting social services and other important aspects of the country. The country’s Ambassador to CARICOM Dr Clarence Henry, is reported saying, “Sending states do not want to provide any sort of assistance to any place like Antigua and Barbuda remember we do not have gold, silver, bauxite, oil we do not have it.” Also, The Bahamas restated its decision to not be a part of the free movement of people, stating that it’s not a member of the Caribbean Single Market and Economy, meaning the possible changes to the Treaty of Chaguaramas, allowing free movement, doesn’t apply to the archipelago.
