#Jamaica, January 16th, 2024 – Jamaica’s agriculture sector is currently threatened by the population of white-tailed deer on the island, which is suspected of being sold. The deer, according to environmentalist Damion Whyte, eat much of Jamaica’s native vegetation, some of which takes a long time to grow, he told the Observer.

Also, he spoke of a farmer who had two acres of carrots consumed and destroyed by the deer, as well as other farmers who had their crops destroyed, which Whyte says is a big problem for agriculture.

This comes as Whyte found out about an Instagram post with a deer up for sale. The reportedly invasive animal was introduced to Jamaica in 1989 as a tourist attraction in Portland, where it is mostly seen. Brewing is now concerned with the spread of the animal to other parishes where agriculture is big.
