#TurksandCaicosIslands, October 3, 2023 – Every October, the Department of Gender Affairs, in partnership with our allies across the territory, dedicate this month to the observance of Domestic Violence Awareness.
In the face of persistent domestic violence within the Turks and Caicos Islands, the Department of Gender Affairs remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring that all survivors have access to justice and the necessary support for their healing and well-being.
This year, our department proudly supports the theme, “Everyone Knows Someone.” This theme seeks to shed light on the pervasive nature of domestic violence and emphasizes that its manifestations go beyond physical harm.
While we acknowledge the impactful efforts made by the Department of Gender Affairs and our fellow stakeholders, it is evident that much work remains. Each year, numerous women and men in the Turks and Caicos experience some form of domestic abuse. To illustrate, in 2020, we received nine (9) reports; in 2021, that number surged to 32 reports; in 2022, it decreased to seventeen (17). Regrettably, in 2023, our department has already received nearly fifty (50) reports, indicating a concerning upward trend based on reported cases.
Domestic violence can inflict injuries, fear, post-traumatic stress disorder, housing instability, absenteeism from school or work, and numerous other devastating consequences. Historically marginalized groups, including persons with disabilities, immigrants, and individuals from racial and ethnic minorities, often experience some of the highest rates of domestic and sexual violence. They also face additional barriers to safety and support. It is important to note that the impact of this epidemic extends far beyond the confines of the home, affecting extended families, schools, and workplaces.
Throughout October, the Department of Gender Affairs will actively disseminate content aimed at increasing awareness and educating the public about the intricate dynamics of domestic violence. The month will commence with a church service at Saint Monica’s Anglican Church in Providenciales.
For our residents in the Family Islands who may have questions but cannot travel to Providenciales, please do not fret. We are bringing our educational caravan to you. Stay tuned to the media and engage with your District Commissioner to learn when our educational team will be visiting your area.
Interested in participating but unsure how to contribute? Wear something purple during the month, particularly on Fridays for ‘Purple Fridays.’ The colour purple symbolizes your solidarity with survivors and your commitment to standing up and speaking out against domestic violence.
Anticipate a wave of educational initiatives, sensitisation programs, and commemorative activities that will be deployed throughout our communities during this month-long observance.
