#TurksandCaicosIslands, October 5, 2023 – Edwin Astwood, Opposition Leader and head of the People's Democratic Movement (PDM), has officially thrown his hat in the ring to become the next premier of the Turks and Caicos Islands.

In a Facebook post on September 14th, Astwood announced his candidacy for the 2025 general election. It was also announced that over 50 other people are vying for a spot in the PDM’s candidate lineup following the close of the Party’s Application period.

Familiar Names like Sean Astwood and Oswald Skippings have expressed interest in running while Elected Member Alvin Garland had shown cautious interest in early 2023 as well.  The PDM closed off applications on September 8th and the party will now hunker down to decide which 15 hopefuls will be presented to the people of the Turks and Caicos as the challengers to the 14-strong PNP lineup that walloped the PDM in 2020.

When asked during a recent press conference how he planned to come back from that decisive defeat and win the people over Astwood said the party had matured.

“We have been there, we know the faults, we know what needs to be done, we know what we didn’t do and we have a different mindset,” he continued. “Our basic philosophy is not different, that’s taking care of the people,”

Astwood is the only Candidate that has been announced.
