#Providenciales, May 23, 2019 – Turks and Caicos – On the 8th of June the Department of Environment and Coastal Resources (DECR) will be hosting the 5th annual learn-to-swim initiative, in collaboration with the Turks & Caicos Islands Swimming Federation.
World Oceans Day, celebrated on the 8th of June, is the motivation behind the initiative which hopes to encourage young and old to get in the water!
“The motivation for a ‘learn-to-swim initiative came from the DECR realising that we cannot ask our community to protect the coral reefs, if they don’t have the ability to fully appreciate them, see them, and understand why the reefs are just so very important to our islands – in terms of economy and safety!”, explained Amy Avenant, the Department’s Environmental Outreach Coordinator.
The initiative will be held at the Bight (Kid’s) Park, Lower Bight, Providenciales. Youth between the ages of 6yrs to 16yrs, can join the session from 08:30 – 09:30, and adults (17yrs and older), from 09:30 – 10:30. The event is free, but the DECR does require participants to register with the Department as spaces are limited.
Ben Stubenberg, TCI Swim Federation President, stated; “It’s always a pleasure to work with DECR on learn-to-swim initiatives, which have become an excellent model for reaching and teaching more adults and kids in TCI. We look forward to many more sessions like the one last week.”
