Nassau, Bahamas – November 27, 2017 – A new bill presented and passed in the House of Assembly was wholly rejected by the Opposition PLP as all four members for the party say the legislation is suspect.

Opposition Leader, Philip Davis said in a media release that the Commercial Enterprises Bill 2017 is fishy because it gives too many concessions to foreign investors and it too highly favours the large land owners in the country.

Davis said:  “The bill seeks to “liberalize the granting of work permits to an enterprise that wishes to establish itself in The Bahamas and requires work permits for its management team and key personnel.”  The Opposition Leader also rejected the statement by Minister Brent Symonette that the bill will have a trickle-down effect for middle and lower income Bahamians.

The Cat Island MP questioned how the investment threshold was determined, claims that the bill gives way too much with Bahamians benefiting way too little and claims the legislation proposed is a ‘sell out’.

Davis recommended that Government work on improving the skill set of the Bahamian workforce and stop trying to undercut progresses made by the former PLP Government.

Davis in that media statement heralded that the bill will be rejected at the Senate level also by the PLP Opposition members there.
