Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the Commonwealth of the Bahamas, His Excellency Hendrik Jan Jurriaan Schuwer paid a courtesy call on Commander Defence Force (Acting) Captain Tellis A. Bethel at the Royal Bahamas Defence Force Headquarters on 24 May 2016.
During the meeting, Ambassador Schuwer was given an overview of the multi-purpose role of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force by Captain Bethel. The two also shared on the unique historical connection between The Bahamas and the Netherlands dating as early as 1695 when Charles Town was renamed, Nassau, after the Dutch Prince William III of Orange-Nassau, who later became King of England.
Matters related to regional security were also discussed during the visit. Following their talks, Ambassador Schuwer and Captain Bethel exchanged tokens in commemoration of the visit. The Ambassador was then taken on a short tour of Coral Harbour Base where he viewed civil works currently underway for the modernization of port facilities at the Base. The civil works are being carried out by the Dutch dredging company, Van Oord, under the Sandy Bottom Project.
