Providenciales, 23 Dec 2015 – The Health Minister wants special needs individuals to register with the Ministry as the department works towards building a more accurate data base.

Hon Dr Rufus Ewing in commemoration of the International Day of the Disabled person said the Turks and Caicos is a great place to live and that his Government is working so that none are left behind.

It was explained that the Special Needs Unit is improving the collection of data and statistics in order to inform policies and the development of services based on needs. The Premier, who is also a medical doctor, said the registration would work to remove barriers so that the physical environments, information and communications technologies and general attitude toward special needs are enhanced.

The 2015 theme for the UN established day was, Inclusion matters: access and empowerment for people of all abilities. And it is challenging member countries to make cities more inclusive and accessible, improve disability data and statistics and zero in on individuals with invisible disabilities.

Registration drives were to be held by the Department on the Day of Disabled Persons, which was December 3rd.
