Governor Introduces the new National Security Council, NSC

Providenciales, 14 Oct 2015 – Governor His Excellency Peter Beckingham, Commissioner of Police James Smith and Security Advisor to Overseas Territories, Larry Covington briefed the media on the first meeting of the National Security Council at a press conference today.

Gov. Beckingham informed that the NSC, which he co-chairs with the Premier, will meet once a month. His Excellency also shared that falling under the NSC will be the, the National Security Advisory Board, a 20 member group to include a cross section of Community leaders.

Commissioner James Smith explained that his role will be key; providing members with strategic assessments of the criminality issues in the TCI and setting the guidelines for the NSC.

Commissioner Smith admitted that his officers need more training, that the force needs enhanced technical capabilities and recommended a more efficient road traffic department to register vehicles and drivers.

As for visiting specialist, Larry Covington, he spoke about his experience, security within the region, sharing of resources, training for officers and increasing the productivity of the force. Covington is Law Enforcement Advisor with the FCO based in Miami, Florida.
