Providenciales, 10 Feb 2015 – It may be seen as finally a proactive step to addressing the reality of some level of gang or territorial violence being prevalent in the Turks and Caicos Islands. The Ministry of Education yesterday announced that all boys on all islands will be exposed to a workshop to help them find healthier ways of handling aggression, anger and bottom line avoiding violence. The move is being spearheaded by the Youth Department of the country and the theme is “Saving our boys: Violence Prevention, the Time is Now”.

There is a three pronged mission revealed in a media statement from the Office of Minister of Education & Youth, DP Akierra Missick. To get boys and young men involved in community awareness activities exposing violence against one another; to gain insight by hearing the perspectives of the participants and to acquaint these boys and young men with the laws and possible results of violent actions. These workshops will take place in Grand Turk (February 17, 2015 Community College 10am); South Caicos (February 20, 2015 Community Center 10am); North Caicos (February 23, 2015 The Library in Bottle creek 10am) and in Providenciales (February 26, 2015) the Environment Center Lower Bight Road 10am). Among the topics is conflict resolution and the Youth Department is seeking volunteers to help make the workshop happen. You can contact Jasmine Parker or Nixon Dickenson to lend support.
