Regional Report: CARICOM meetings; Jamaica confirms ChikV deaths; Haiti has a Mariott

Providenciales, 26 Feb 2015 – CARICOM meetings begin today for two days in Nassau, Bahamas at the Melia Resort and Premier Hon Dr Rufus Ewing will attend for the Turks and Caicos Islands which is an Associate Member of Caricom. From Jamaica: the government there on Tuesday night confirmed that there are definitely two, but as many as 14 deaths linked to the Chikungunya Virus; Jamaica has charted nearly 5,000 cases as it continues to grapple with the mosquito borne virus.

And the Marriott hotel brand has found a home in Haiti and the hotel’s owner is Digicel. Dennis O’Brien, CEO of Digicel was joined by former US President Bill Clinton for the opening of the $45 million dollar, 175 room hotel in Port Au Prince. The hotel creates 200 new jobs and according to Haiti’s Tourism Minister, Stephanie Villedrouin Balmir, since the earthquake 2,500 new hotel rooms have been built countrywide, bringing the national inventory of resort rooms to 4,322.
