KINGSTON, Feb. 19 (JIS): Approximately $700 million was spent to refurbish 128 health centres last year, under the Primary Health Care Infrastructure Renewal Programme.
The programme is expected to pave the way for significant changes to the current system.
This was disclosed by Governor-General, His Excellency the Most Hon. Sir Patrick Allen, while delivering the Throne Speech at Gordon House on February 19.
“To provide increased health care access to under-served and rural communities, the Government will deploy mobile units offering general medicine, dental health and blood collection,” he informed.
On the matter of access to potable water, the Governor-General said a programme to improve water supply and pursue rural water development projects is underway.
“The Government is committed to ensuring that potable water is available, especially to those living in rural areas,” he explained.
The Governor-General said these efforts will continue with the rehabilitation of water tanks islandwide, upgrading of water supply systems, refurbishing of treatment plants and the installation of domestic and commercial water meters.
The Throne Speech, titled ‘Partnership for Development: Inclusive Growth…Expanding Opportunities’, outlined the priority programmes and policies to be pursued by the Government during the new fiscal year, April 1 to March 31, 2016.
