Providenciales, 16 Jan 2015 – Voter registration is low among young people and according to Dudley Lewis, the Supervisor of Elections, about 30% of the eligible population is not registered to participate in a general election. Lewis fears many will be disappointed when election day comes around as the electors’ list has to be at least 12 months old in order to be valid on election day. What does this mean? Well, if the Premier decides to dissolve the House of Assembly for a General Election within 2015; only individuals registered on the current voter register list will be able to vote.
If the Premier dissolves the House of Assembly for an election in early 2016; only those on the newest elector’s list – which comes out later this month on January 30th, can vote. The problem with the newest list is that registration is already closed. Magnetic Media spoke to the Elections Supervisor yesterday, and he shared there is an information campaign coming for the electorate from his office; he said the lower interest to register to vote among young people is worrisome with elections constitutionally scheduled to take place within four years of the last election. It could be too late for many… and if not; time is of the essence.
A social media conversation has already started on whether or not there will be a so called snap election; some going as far as to suggest individuals who may throw their hat in the race. The last voter register has 7,247 elector’s names on the list.
