AG SAYS 2015 TO SEE MODERNISED LEGAL SYSTEM

Providenciales, 06 Jan 2014 – Named the Person of the Year for the Turks and Caicos Islands; Rhondalee Braithwaite Knowles is the country’s first indigenous Attorney General and she had the honor yesterday of moving to open the Legal Year for the country. AG Knowles announced plans for a modernized access to the laws of the land; saying work on a revision will be completed within the first quarter of 2015.

Those in the galley also heard a Year in Review report; three law drafters produced 24 ordinances and worked on 50 pieces of supporting legislation. Among them the establishment of the Invest Turks and Caicos Islands Agency, Financial Intelligence Agency Ordinance, the Dormant Accounts Ordinance and the Rehabilitation of Offenders Ordinance 2014. The Attorney General highlighted that there are some new initiatives too being proposed for this new year; as many as a dozen including: New Domestic Insurance provisions, Trust law reform, Immigration law reform, Important criminal law and procedure reforms, an Employment Bill to repeal and replace the current law with substantial reforms, she called them and Small Medium Enterprise proposals to encourage local business. AG Knowles characterized 2015 as having a heavy legislative drafting programme and she says her office will hire one more drafter to help that cause.
