NOTICE OF AGRICULTURAL PRODUCT RECALL

The Turks and Caicos Islands Department of Agriculture and the Environmental Health Department are conjointly issuing a product recall notice to the general public.

On October 12, 2014, SunBurst Foods, Goldsboro NC, USA voluntarily issued a recall of all of its SunBurst Fresh Bites and Private labeled products which are currently in the market because these products have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea; Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

All codes, all sell-by dates and sizes of the following brands are being recalled:

· SunBurst
·Fresh Bites

Private label products are identified by the following brand names:

· River Edge Farms
· CFW
· Southern Zest
· CJ’s Vending
· Binford Street Deli
· Middle Georgia Vendors
· Roanoke Foods
· Select Foods
· Jesse Jones

The products being recalled were sold in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and Georgia. The recall was initiated as a result of sampling and testing performed by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

To date, there have been no reported illnesses related to these products. However, the Turks Caicos Government Islands Department of Agriculture and Environmental Health Department are urging consumers, who have purchased the affected products to desist from eating them and destroy or return them to the place of purchase for a refund. Distributers within the Turks and Caicos Islands are urged to contact their suppliers immediately.

Persons who suspect that they might have consumed any of the affected products and are feeling unwell are advised to visit a medical facility immediately.

Importers of agricultural produce are also advised to pay close attention to the notice and to ensure that their consignments destined for importation are untainted.
