PROVIDENCIALES, OCTOBER 6, 2014 — SIPT TRIAL MUST HAPPEN is the firm view expressed, ever so softly by His Excellency the Governor Peter Beckingham today in my one on one interview with the territory’s now one year governor.  Governor Beckingham was addressing a question about the public concern of the cost to run this trial, costs which many believe often cause other important national necessities to be neglected.

“There should be a trial, and that is precisely what will happen eventually.  I don’t know when it will be but dates are being set, I believe, for a pre-hearing in October, and then the full trial starting probably in December.  But I think for the Turks and Caicos reputation as a country which has a strong legal and judicial system it is important that a trial should take place.  I recognize there is a cost, (Deandrea) but that’s a cost which any country would have to bear if it wishes to be seen to have a judicial system that is strong and fair.”

We asked if the British government should take on more of this multi-million dollar bill.  the bottom line, NO.  The UK believes it is a cost for The TCI to bear on its own.

Other issues discussed with HE Peter Beckingham included police training, police conduct, the impending Memorandum of Understanding with Haiti, relationships with the PNP Administration and the PDM Official Opposition and whether he last week was sending a warning to Government Support Services Minister, Hon George Lightbourne.

The full interview will be posted at Magnetic Media TV on YouTube.
