Walk & Run for Breast Cancer Awareness

Providenciales, 03 Oct 2014 – Cancer screening in Latin America and the Caribbean is very poor, and if not improved the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) says the number of women dying within that regional block will surge to as many as one million per year. It is Breast Cancer Awareness month, and tomorrow the annual walk which is designed to encourage a healthy lifestyle while raising awareness will happen from Graceway Gourmet to the Leeward roundabout.

A 2013 report by PAHO exposed that men are dying due prostate, lung and stomach cancers mainly… and Caribbean and Latin American women; well the biggest cancer killer is breast cancer, closely followed by cervical cancer. Silvana Luciani, PAHO/WHO advisor was reporting to the Jamaica Observer when she shared that “the large number is very disconcerting…” The answer for the region, which sees women in rural or remote areas suffer most, is to tremendously improve screening and treatment.

The walk and run of the National Cancer Society of the Turks and Caicos is also a fundraiser and it gets started at 5:30am.
