Concerns have been expressed about the Royal Turks and Caicos Island Police Force laying what has been referred to as ‘adult charges’ against minors.
The most recent being a 15 year old girl charged with burglary.
In response to this concern the Commissioner of Police, Colin Farquar has informed that the proper procedure was followed where a parent/guardian is present along with a representative from the Social Welfare Department during the interview and the charging process.
Commissioner Farquar also added that when taken before the Court, the juvenile will be considered as a juvenile and if found guilty, the punishment could be under the Juveniles Ordinance or under the Probation of Offenders Ordinance.
