Sixty five thousand dollars to be invested in spiny lobsters

The Department of Environment and Maritime Affairs has received a funding from the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office to carry out a project to improve the habitats of spiny lobsters in TCI waters.

Catch numbers for the species have declined over the past 5 years and it is believed that the effects of hurricanes Hanna and Ike in 2008 have impacted the industry. DEMA will host workshops to teach fishermen how to deploy artificial habitats for the sought after crustaceans.

In addition, a full biological assessment of traditional fishing areas will be conducted in this project which will last for up to a year.

Monitoring however will continue for a further three years.
