TCI: Lightning storm interrupts air traffic and electricity

#Providenciales, May 17, 2019 – Turks and Caicos – The beastly lightning storm this morning in Providenciales disrupted air travel to the island for a time and it left consumers on three islands without electricity this morning.

FortisTCI explained that, “an initial assessment as to the cause of the outage reveals that multiple lightning strikes caused the generation plant’s protection system to respond, resulting in a system shutdown. Once the lightning storm passed and the area was deemed safe for crews to begin work, the company began restoration of services.”

The black out lasted and hour and twenty minutes, from 8:10 a.m. to 9:35 a.m for residents of Providenciales, North and Middle Caicos.

There was rain and localized flooding and there was concern initially, that school might not be able to be carried on for the day.

Shortly after 9 a.m., flights from Grand Turk to Providenciales resumed and business as usual continued throughout the day.

The Bahamas Department of Meteorology issued several severe weather alerts today; it is recommended that small craft operators monitor the weather closely as visibility will be reduced to around three nautical miles (3NM).  Gusty winds, scattered showers and thunderstorms are all in the overnight to Friday evening forecast.
