On Friday 4th January 2019, multiple reports of shooting at the Pirates Den known as the Five Dollar Bar on Aviation Drive, Providenciales were made to 911 Central. Police Officers and EMT personnel were dispatched were two persons were found with gun-shot injuries. An investigation ensued and the two males were arrested.
Both males received double charges each for Causing Grievous Bodily Harm, Discharging Firearm and Discharging Ammunition. They were both taken to court and were not allowed to enter a plea. A sufficiency hearing is set for March 1st 2019. They were both remanded in custody.
Commissioner of Police Mr. James Smith stated, “It is unfortunate that innocent bystanders were caught up in this type of violence, it shows the brazen disregard of the law by these shooters. We were able to quickly get these men off the streets by the help of members of the public and this again proves that if we work together we can quickly deal with these types of unlawful acts in our community. Every time criminals decide to discharge firearms on our streets, especially at a public gathering where lots of people were having a normal Friday night, they endanger the lives of everybody around them and show a blatant disregard for the safety of others. We need your help to get these illegal firearms off the streets of Providenciales and the other islands where ever they may be. We will soon launch a Cash for Guns campaign which will give you allow you to anonymously submit information on persons with guns. This incident is reckless, reprehensible and there’s no justification for this type of senseless violence in the country.”
