BAHAMAS: SEVERE WEATHER WARNING

#Bahamas, January 10, 2018 – Nassau – THE BAHAMAS DEPARTMENT OF METEOROLOGY HAS ISSUED A SEVERE WEATHER WARNING FROM 9PM UNTIL 11PM WEDNESDAY 10TH JANUARY, 2018.

A SEVERE WEATHER WARNING IS IN EFFECT FOR NEW PROVIDENCE, BIMINI, GRAND BAHAMA, BERRY ISLANDS, ACKLINS, CROOKED ISLAND AND THEIR ADJACENT WATERS.

AT 9PM OBSERVATION, RADAR AND SATELLITE IMAGERY SHOWED CLUSTERS OF HEAVY SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS OVER THE AFOREMENTIONED AREAS…THIS WEATHER IS ASSOCIATED WITH INSTABILITY DUE TO A SURFACE TROUGH IN VICINITY OF THE NORTHWEST BAHAMAS ALONG WITH A MID TO UPPER LEVEL LOW JUST WEST OF THE AREA.

SOME OF THESE SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS WILL BE SEVERE AT TIMES CAUSING STRONG GUSTY WINDS, DANGEROUS LIGHTNING, HEAVY DOWNPOURS, HAIL AND POSSIBLE WATERSPOUT OR TORNADIC ACTIVITY.

BOATERS IN THE WARNING AREA SHOULD SEEK SAFE HARBOUR AND RESIDENTS IN THE WARNING AREA SHOULD STAY INDOORS AND AWAY FROM WINDOWS WHEN CONDITIONS WORSEN.  RESIDENTS SHOULD NOT SEEK SHELTER UNDER TREES OR IN WATER AS THESE CAN BECOME LIGHTNING CONDUCTORS.
