Extended forecast for The Bahamas and the Turks & Caicos Islands

#Bahamas, October 23, 2017 – Nassau – GENERAL SITUATION: STRONG HIGH PRESSURE SYSTEM ANCHORED NORTH OF THE AREA WILL GRADUALLY WEAKEN ACROSS THE ISLANDS BY TONIGHT.

SPECIAL WARNINGS:  BOATERS AND BEACHGOERS SHOULD CONTINUE TO EXERCISE CAUTION DUE TO ROUGH SURF AND THE HIGH RISK OF RIP CURRENTS MAINLY ALONG NORTH AND EAST COAST BEACHES.

WEATHER: PARTLY SUNNY, BREEZY AND HOT WITH A FEW SHOWERS AND THE CHANCE OF ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS TODAY. MOSTLY FAIR AND MILD TONIGHT.

ADVISORY: A SMALL CRAFT CAUTION IS IN EFFECT FOR THE NORTHWEST BAHAMAS AND A SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR THE CENTRAL AND SOUTHEAST BAHAMAS AND TURKS AND CAICOS.   SMALL CRAFT SHOULD ALSO BE ALERT FOR GUSTY WINDS AND HIGHER SEAS IN OR NEAR HEAVY SHOWERS OR THUNDERSTORMS.

WINDS:  EAST TO SOUTHEAST 15 TO 20 KNOTS OVER OPEN WATERS IN THE NORTHWEST BAHAMAS…EASTERLY AT 15 TO 25 KNOTS OVER OPEN WATERS IN THE CENTRAL, SOUTHEAST BAHAMAS AND THE TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS.

SEAS: 4 TO 7 FEET OVER THE OCEAN IN THE NORTHWEST BAHAMAS…5 TO 8 FEET OVER THE OCEAN IN THE CENTRAL AND SOUTHEAST BAHAMAS.

EXTENDED FORECAST: PRE-FRONTAL ACTIVITY ASSOCIATED WITH AN APPROACHING COLD FRONT WILL INCREASE RAIN CHANCES ACROSS THE NORTHWEST BAHAMAS BY MID-WEEK.   THE FRONT WILL GRADUALLY DRIFT SOUTHEASTWARDS WITH BREEZY AND SLIGHTLY COOLER CONDITIONS IN ITS WAKE.

WEATHER: VARIABLE CLOUDINESS WITH A FEW ISOLATED SHOWERS AND THE CHANCE OF THUNDERSTORMS MAINLY ACROSS THE NORTHWEST BAHAMAS.

WINDS: SOUTHEAST TO SOUTH AT 10 TO 15 KNOTS IN THE NORTHWEST BAHAMAS…EASTERLY AT 15 KNOTS IN THE CENTRAL, SOUTHEAST BAHAMAS AND TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS.

SEAS: 2 TO 4 FEET IN THE NORTHWEST BAHAMAS…3 TO 5 FEET IN THE CENTRAL, SOUTHEAST BAHAMAS AND TURKS AND CAICOS.

WEATHER: CLOUDY TO OVERCAST AND HOT WITH SCATTERED SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS WITH SOME BECOMING HEAVY TO SEVERE AT TIMES ACROSS THE NORTHWEST BAHAMAS.   PARTLY CLOUDY AND HOT WITH THE CHANCE OF ISOLATED SHOWERS IN THE CENTRAL, SOUTHEAST BAHAMAS AND TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS.

WINDS: SOUTHERLY AT 10 TO 15 KNOTS BUT BECOMING NORTHWEST TO NORTH AT 15 TO 25 KNOTS BY NIGHT AFTER THE FRONTAL PASSAGE IN THE NORTHWEST BAHAMAS…SOUTHEAST TO SOUTH AT 10 TO 15 KNOTS IN THE CENTRAL, SOUTHEAST BAHAMAS AND TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS.

SEAS: 2 TO 4 FEET ACROSS ALL AREAS BUT BUILDING UP TO 5 TO 8 FEET BY NIGHT AFTER THE FRONTAL PASSAGE IN THE NORTHWEST BAHAMAS

TROPICAL WEATHER OUTLOOK: A BROAD AREA OF LOW PRESSURE IS EXPECTED TO FORM OVER THE SOUTHWESTERN CARIBBEAN SEA IN A FEW DAYS.  SLOW DEVELOPMENT OF THIS SYSTEM IS POSSIBLE THEREAFTER WHILE IT MOVES NORTHWESTWARD TO NORTHWARD.   THIS SYSTEM HAS A LOW CHANCE OF 30 PERCENT FOR TROPICAL CYCLONE DEVELOPMENT THROUGH 5 DAYS.
