Only 51% Eligible Bahamians registered, PM says campaigning soon begins

Nassau, Bahamas, February 10, 2017Intense campaigning will soon begin in The Bahamas now that the Boundaries Commission report and proposed changes are made known.  Prime Minister, Perry Christie said the last thing his Administration and party wants to do is go to the polls with the voter count low.

Right now, barely just over half of those eligible to register have done so.  Voter registration is at 93,367 people up to February 6, 2017 said the country’s leader, but there are some 183,000 Bahamians actually eligible to vote.

Already there are criticisms for the boundary changes, charges that they lean in favor of the PLP and so that age old tactic of gerrymandering once again surfaces.  But the PM says there is more work for his government to do before the elections are held; developments on Bimini, Abaco, Eleuthera and Exuma were identified and who could forget, the highly anticipated and promised VAT report.

The current voter list has only 51% of eligible Bahamians registered.
